Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained that Estevao Willian’s limited game time this season stems from his recovery from injury and the high physical demands of English football.
During Chelsea’s Carabao Cup match against Liverpool on Wednesday, October 28, the 19-year-old remained an unused substitute, even as fans pushed for his introduction. The match ended 1-1 at Anfield, with Chelsea ultimately losing in a penalty shootout.
Alonso acknowledged the young player’s frustration, noting that all players naturally wish to feature consistently. Nevertheless, the Spanish coach emphasized that plenty of opportunities lie ahead for Estevao as the campaign unfolds.

Following the loss at Liverpool, Xabi Alonso remarked:
“I understand his situation and that he could be happier for sure. Every player wants to play, wants to be part of the team.”
The Blues manager further stressed the rigorous nature of English football, noting that Estevao is still adjusting after his fitness setback.
He added:
“Yes, we know that the Premier League and the game in England is really intense. You need to be up for it. Este has played, for sure, it’s his second season. But he had the injury and he’s in that process.”
Despite his restricted appearances so far, Alonso expressed full confidence that the Brazilian youngster will make a significant impact for Chelsea later in the season.
“Trust me, I’m sure the season is going to be long and Este is going to play his role,” he concluded.
