There is no denying it anymore: Tyla has officially transcended her status as South Africa’s breakout sweetheart to become a bona fide international pop icon. Serving as a teaser for her highly awaited APOP* project, Tyla latest single “IS IT LOVE” stands out as a masterclass in vocal texture and impeccable emotional pacing. Rather than relying on high-octane energy, the track deliberately slows things down, compelling the listener to simply absorb the mood.
The sonic architecture of the track is exceptionally smooth. By stepping back from the intense, pounding log drums typical of the genre, the production opts for a polished, mid-tempo Afro-pop groove. This weightless, open arrangement gives Tyla’s trademark falsetto and intimate, conversational vocals the perfect amount of space to resonate. The resulting mix sounds incredibly high-end and refined, instantly cementing it as the ultimate late-night driving soundtrack.
