Manchester United’s turbulent start to the season has erupted into a full-scale institutional crisis following a 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium.

The Spanish side pounced immediately when Pablo Barrios opened the scoring in the opening minute. Matters worsened for the Red Devils in the second half when Leny Yoro received a straight red card in the 74th minute, before summer arrival Ademola Lookman sealed the result with a clinical finish in the 79th minute.

Lisandro Martínez Post-Match Explosion

Furious with the team’s trajectory and lack of depth, central defender Lisandro Martínez delivered an unreserved, explosive post-match critique aimed squarely at technical director Jason Wilcox and the club’s boardroom recruitment strategy.

“I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director. I have to be honest, as players we have to do more, but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.” – Lisandro Martínez

Martínez stressed that ongoing shortcomings cannot be pinned solely on the coaching staff or players, arguing that despite arrivals like Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba, and Andrey Santos, the club failed to build a deep enough roster to battle Europe’s elite. The outspoken remarks have reportedly created immense boardroom friction and sparked heated exchanges within the squad, piling pressure on the leadership to address structural flaws as the team struggles domestically and in Europe.
