Cristiano Ronaldo suspended from Portugal

The disciplinary proceedings initiated by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) against 41-year-old captain Cristiano Ronaldo mark a significant impasse between the legendary forward and head coach Jorge Jesus.

The dispute stems from Portugal’s Nations League encounter against Norway, where Ronaldo was left as an unused substitute despite warming up extensively along the touchline. Following an alleged breach of an agreement regarding how his role would be managed and communicated, Ronaldo departed the team’s training base in Copenhagen prior to their fixture against Denmark.

Cristiano Ronaldo faces potential Sanctions

• Article 160 Regulations: Under the FPF disciplinary code, the unauthorized or unjustified abandonment of national team duty carries a potential suspension ranging from one to six months.
• Federation Process: The non-automatic provisional suspension issued on October 9, 2026, was officially referred to the FPF Disciplinary Investigation Committee on October 10 as an urgent matter, with strict confidentiality imposed until the inquiry concludes.
• Domestic Continuity: The national team suspension does not impact his club availability for Al-Nassr, where Ronaldo scored in their 3–0 Saudi Pro League victory over Diriyah Club on October 9.

Expected Timeline & National Team Future

Despite the ongoing investigation, Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença has signaled that Ronaldo is expected to return to the squad during the November 2026 international window, provided the formal disciplinary sanctions are resolved.

Portugal have already secured their qualification for the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals, setting up November fixtures against Denmark and Wales as the likely venue for his international return.
