Nigerian entertainment heavyweight, Chocolate City has issued a formal press release addressing internet rumors regarding its corporate ownership and alleged ties to foreign intelligence operations.
The prominent record label – which manages high-profile acts like BlaqBonez, Young Jonn, and M.I Abaga – refuted claims connecting the organization to Universal Music Group (UMG) alongside rumors proposing backing or direction from external state actors.
Publishing the document on its official X handle on Tuesday, the music entity characterized the viral narratives as “false and irresponsible,” taking the opportunity to clarify its financial structure and corporate status.
Specifically, the company disproved reports alleging any active or past partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG).
Furthermore, the label flatly denied speculation claiming it receives capital or operational management from foreign intelligence units, addressing viral social media posts linking the enterprise to the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The management team highlighted that the label has functioned as an autonomous entity for over twenty years, achieving growth strictly through talent cultivation, dedicated effort, and genuine commercial alliances.
Executives emphasized that theories asserting outside governance or espionage funding completely distort the reality of the company’s daily operations and corporate ties.
Chocolate City’s public clarification arrives during a broader digital discourse covering corporate ownership, financing models, and international deals within the West African music industry.

Chocolate City official statement declared:
“Our attention has been drawn to false claims circulating about Chocolate City Music. For over 20 years, we have built an independent African business through talent, hard work and legitimate commercial partnerships. Any suggestion that Chocolate City Music is funded, controlled or directed by any foreign intelligence agency or state actor is false and irresponsible. The content in question also contains a fundamental error: Chocolate City Music has never had, and does not have, any contractual relationship or affiliation with Universal Music Group. Chocolate City Music remains wholly Nigerian-owned, proudly independent, and focused on building lasting value for African creatives and the African creative industries.”
