FIFA is considering a historic change to the list of participant starting from 2030 World Cup, potentially increasing it to 64 teams.
This one-off proposal, submitted by South American football body CONMEBOL, would make the centennial tournament the largest ever. It would also be a significant jump from the new 48-team format set to debut at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
The proposal was presented to FIFA President Gianni Infantino and General Secretary Mattias Grafstrom by politicians and football executives from Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay.
