The Recording Academy has announced a significant expansion for the 69th Annual Grammy Awards, introducing five new categories alongside overhauled voting regulations ahead of the February 7, 2027, ceremony.
According to Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., these structural updates are designed to mirror the evolving diversity and global expansion of the modern music landscape.
The newly introduced Grammy Awards categories include:
- Best Asian Pop Music Performance: Dedicated to exceptional tracks across K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and other regional pop styles featuring an Asian language.
- Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance: Created to honor joint efforts and group dynamics within contemporary R&B.
- Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance: Spotlighting classic pop interpretations that stand apart from current commercial pop trends.
- Best Traditional Folk Album: Celebrating heritage folk recordings. Consequently, the previous “Best Folk Album” bracket has been rebranded as Best Contemporary Folk Album.
- Best Latin Song: A songwriter’s award honoring newly penned Latin tracks that feature at least 51% Spanish lyrics.
Parallel to the new fields, the Academy is rolling out sweeping procedural adjustments. A new “Ballot Plus” initiative will permit qualified voting members with multi-genre expertise to vote in up to 15 peer-reviewed categories—moving away from the conventional 10/3 voting format. Furthermore, rules for Best New Artist have been relaxed, allowing a musician to be submitted up to four times instead of three.

Criteria for full-length projects have also shifted: the minimum requirement for new recordings on an eligible album has dropped from 75% to 66%. In a nod to the streaming era, digital-only projects are now permitted to enter the Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album fields, assuming proper documentation accompanies the download. Finally, songwriters and composers will enjoy equal status with engineers and producers, meaning creators of new material on winning genre albums will now take home official Grammy statuettes and certificates.
