The Headies organizers have revealed the reasoning behind their decision to take the 18th edition of the prestigious awards ceremony to Toronto, Canada, in 2026. According to the team, the international move is designed to scale the platform’s global footprint while driving further support for Nigeria’s thriving creative sector.
The revelation came during a star-studded event titled “The Big Announcement” at the Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, drawing a crowd of top entertainment stakeholders, government representatives, and industry heavyweights. Addressing the audience, Headies founder Ayo Animashaun confirmed the Canadian host city but reassured fans that the domestic audience wouldn’t be excluded. Instead, the event will feature a synchronized, live-linked watch party bridging Lagos and Toronto.
“Our next stop for the 18th Headies is Toronto,” Animashaun explained. “But we are making sure Nigeria comes along with us. We are setting up an interactive watch party to connect the experience directly between Toronto and Lagos.”

Defending the decision against critics who oppose hosting the flagship African music awards abroad, Animashaun emphasized the harsh realities of event financing, noting that keeping the franchise alive demands substantial backing. “People have questioned taking the show outside the country again, claiming it feels wrong,” he noted. “But the alternative is the event shutting down entirely. Securing international sponsorship is how we keep this platform funded.”
The organizers view the Canadian expansion as a strategic step toward cementing the worldwide influence of Afrobeats and Nigerian entertainment. An official date for the 2026 Headies Awards ceremony has not yet been finalized.
