Lyon vs Manchester United

Manchester United continue their hunt for another Europa League trophy when they visit Lyon in the first leg of their quarter-final clash this Thursday night.

Despite having a bad season in the Premier League, currently on 13th position with just 7 games to play, Manchester United performances and results have been much improved on the continent, as they have to continue the record against Lyon. The Red devils are the only unbeaten side in the Europa League this season and were emphatic victors against Real Sociedad in the last 16.

Lyon have turned the better side since Paulo Fonseca’s arrival and have now won 8 of their last 10 matches in all competitions, including two comfortable victories over FCSB in the round of 16. The Portuguese coach is currently serving a 9-month suspension for angrily confronting a referee earlier this season, but, fortunately for Les Gones, that ban doesn’t apply in European competition.

Lyon team news

Lyon will be without two primary forwards this Thursday as Malick Fofana, who was sidelined with an ankle injury, is recently joined in the treatment room by fellow young winger Ernest Nuamah. The Ghana international had been in excellent form before tearing his ACL just seven minutes into the weekend win over Lille.

There are familiar faces that will greet the United supporters this evening, most notably former Red Devils midfielder Nemanja Matic – who has had some choice words for Andre Onana during the first leg build-up.

Also to face the Red devils are former Arsenal stars – Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Alexandre Lacazette, and as well Moussa Niakhate, Duje Caleta-Car, Jordan Veretout and Said Benrahma, who all have Premier League experience.

Ahead of the trip to Lyon, Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw has been named among the 23-man travelling party. After recovering from injury, might start the match or come from the bench.

However, Matthijs de Ligt, Toby Collyer, Jonny Evans, Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo have all missed out as expected but there are spots for young talents Jaydan Kamason, Godwill Kukonki and Jack Moorhouse.

Lyon vs United score prediction

United have more often than not underwhelmed this season with their best performances seen in the European stage, especially since Amorim’s arrival in November. Just to keep the teams hope alive they will want to avoid defeat ahead of next week’s second leg at Old Trafford.

With Fonseca’s men in strong form, Lyon will make that tricky. As the team housed many experienced players in top flight clubs in the premier league, the match will be a very difficult on for the red devils to secure a victory.

Prediction: Lyon 2-0 Man Utd
